American Women Artists
The world of American art is a diverse one, and women have been active participants at all levels. They create visual works of art that speak to us in their own unique way—using paint, clay, glass, paper, cloth and photography. They act on the stage and screen, compose music and poetry and write books that provoke and inspire.
Whether self-taught like Grandma Moses or classically trained, women artists have contributed greatly to America’s culture and history. While we may be familiar with the work of iconic women artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Georgia O’Keeffe, there are many more who deserve our attention.
American Women Artists is dedicated to the inspiration, celebration and encouragement of women in the visual fine arts. AWA was founded over 30 years ago to bring the work of women artists to the attention of the art community. They accomplish this through museum shows, juried competitions in leading galleries around the country, symposiums and workshops and international travel and exhibitions.
These exhibitions showcase the wide range of styles and mediums used by women artists, from the earliest, who were pioneers of the American landscape tradition to contemporary artists who have influenced the direction of art in the United States. The exhibitions also reveal how women’s artistic triumphs often came at a significant cost—often over the tension between their professional artistic careers and their responsibilities as wives, mothers and daughters.
Some of the most interesting aspects of these two exhibitions are highlighted in a restaging of them, co-curated by Conaty and performed at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. Interviews with artists give insight into their firsthand experiences of the sexism that they experienced, the ways in which they responded to it and the ways that their own creative choices shaped the era.
As a result of the success of these two exhibitions, the organization of American Women Artists was born. Their goal was to establish an organization that could help women painters and sculptors overcome the barriers they faced in order to achieve the level of professional artist that they sought. Nationally acclaimed sculptor Star York became the group’s first president.
Lake Junaluska

You can also visit the World Methodist Museum and explore the many gardens, including the Susanna Wesley Garden. Mother McAuley Catholic High School
A brick fundraising campaign is a popular way to raise funds for Preschools, Elementary Schools, and High School programs. These programs are often in need of extra funding to provide students with things like playgrounds, outdoor classes, new buildings, or even uniforms. Engraved bricks are an affordable and effective option for fundraising. They also offer permanent recognition to graduating students, honorable alumni, and special teachers or coaches.
Mother McAuley is a highly rated, all-girls Catholic high school located in Chicago, IL. It has 876 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. Tuition is $13,800 for the highest grade offered. Most of the students attend college after graduation.
The school offers a rigorous liberal arts philosophy integrated with a strong college preparatory curriculum. It prepares young women to live in a complex, dynamic world by developing their intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual capacities, as well as their ability to communicate and serve others. It is guided by the values of its foundress, Catherine McAuley.

Warrior Foundation Freedom Station
When Navy wife Sandy Lehmkuhler saw the injured warriors at Naval Medical Center San Diego, she noticed they didn’t have some basic quality-of-life items. Among them were electric razors, and she knew they needed them to shave. So, she went on the local radio station to make a plea for donations and was amazed at how quickly her message got around.
Soon, she founded Warrior Foundation Freedom Station to address both immediate and long-term needs. From purchasing plane tickets for injured warriors to travel home for the holidays to providing transitional housing, they have made a huge impact in the lives of these men and women who have given so much for their country.
Warrior Foundation Freedom Station is a community of cottages and apartments that give wounded military veterans the time, space and support they need to successfully transition into civilian life. They help them choose a new career, enroll in college or vocational schools and learn to manage their personal finances. And, most importantly, they offer support for their families.
Each resident pays a fraction of the market rent in order to foster independence and prepare them for the real-world. They also participate in community events, such as yoga, cycling and fishing, and receive a variety of support services from certified experts, including job-search assistance, resume writing guidance and interview coaching. The foundation also provides access to professional counselors who help with issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
Last year, the nonprofit bought a third property, bringing its total number of homes to 29. The newest property, known as Freedom Station III, features 12 cottages and apartments in a courtyard setting.
